Summer Week 2: Sometimes Life Gets in the Way, But I’m Determined to Push Through It!

Just when I thought I was finally going to flawlessly succeed at this whole weight loss/fitness thing, life threw a wrench in my plans. I’ve been having issues with my car for a while, and last week it finally bit the dust… for now. I found out it’s going to cost a couple thousand to fix, so now I’m trying to figure out alternative plans. This incident has really shaken up my workout schedule. I work and live on opposite sides of the city, and everywhere I go definitely requires a car to get there. There was no jogging at the beach, no hiking and no gym this past week! Also, since I weigh myself at the gym, I was unable to get a weight for this week, so instead of guessing, I’m going to have to say I’ve stayed the same.

It’s typical that the week I decide to get it together, is the week things fall apart.

Life is definitely a comedy sometimes, and it seems I can either laugh at its jokes, or crawl in a corner and eat a box of Hostess cupcakes. I chose the former. I decided I was going to figure this thing out and take it as an opportunity to test my motivation.

My view while waiting at the bus stop

All week I’ve been taking the bus. Walking to and from the bus stop to work and home is about 45 minutes total, which isn’t that bad of a workout in my opinion. I should have worked out more this past week, but the stress of what is going on with my car has put a minor damper on my motivation. To make up for it, I have been getting off the bus one stop earlier so that I have to walk a longer distance.

Guilt of not working out, diverted.

Where Diets go to Die

In my first week I’ve been eating pretty healthfully for the most part, but still struggling with giving in to the cravings. The challenge of the weekend is always a tough one as well, but I can say with all honesty that I did better than I have previously. Usually weekends are where diets go to die, but I maintained good choices overall.

I also work in a small office and this week has been especially difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle because I’m surrounded by junk food. It’s always been there, but when you’re trying to avoid it is when it stares you right in the face. We have a closet that is filled with chips, chocolate, popcorn granola bars, soda, fruit snacks, etc. Whenever we have a client meeting, we bring them cookies or pastries and there’s always leftovers. I don’t even want to mention our cupboard that stays stocked with See’s assorted chocolates. Most of the junk is fine with me. All of it except for the chocolate. If I was a super hero, chocolate would be my kryptonite. The Snickers call my name everyday after lunch, and I need an alternative sweet tooth solution. In the past, dates have done the job, so when I do my shopping at the end of this week, I intend to replace my chocolate indulgence with dates.

Goals for the Upcoming Week

I go to L.A. Fitness to workout and although there is one right around the corner from my job, I’ve always gone to a further one because it has more amenities. Given my current car situation, I’m going to start going to the gym closer to my job after work at least once this week, do my “Fitness at Home” workout at least once, in addition to my regular walking to the bus stop.

In regards to my diet, I’m going to stick to my same mostly vegetarian meals and snacks. Here is an example of my daily meal plan:

Breakfast

Kale, banana and pineapple smoothie with ground flax seed, cinnamon and nutmeg

Kale, banana, pineapple smoothie with ground flaxseed, cinnamon and nutmeg (the only liquid I use is water and it’s still very sweet).

Morning Snack

Handful of almonds; piece of fruit

Lunch

Spinach salad with quinoa, cucumber and plum tomatoes with homemade balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing

Afternoon snack

2 fun size Snickers (replacing with dates)

100 calorie pack of popcorn

Carrots or piece of fruit

Dinner

Large plate of steamed kale on top quinoa with butter, salt, garlic salt, pepper and nutmeg

Herbal tea

This is pretty standard, but it changes depending on if my office is ordering in for lunch or if I go to an after work happy-hour or dinner.

This week is my best friend’s birthday, so there will be a lot of celebrating, but I intend to make smarter choices when eating out, i.e., ordering a side salad instead of fries, etc.

Here’s to a more successful week than last!
