Byron Week 4: Going SUPER Green-Friendly

Last week I mentioned how I attempted (and succeeded!) my very first lettuce wrap. This week I get even more green-friendly!

Before starting my very serious approach to weight loss and getting fit, I did a lot of research. I wanted to be sure that how I lost weight didn’t hurt my body in any way. I’m talking more about what I put in my body to aid in weigh loss. There are so many offerings that could supposedly help me speed my metabolism and burn fat off in days. And while there are many “safe” over-the-counter drugs that are FDA “approved,” part of me is still hesitant about taking certain supplements that speed up metabolism to the rate of a hummingbird’s. I won’t go in to naming specific drugs, but let’s just say there are so many on drug store shelves (and day-time commercials that promote them) that it’s a very tempting thought. Why not just take a drug that I know nothing about except what they tell me in their flashy commercial to make the whole getting back in to shape processes easier?

To make a very long, well-researched story short: over-the-counter weight-loss aids are pretty scary to me and something I just don’t think I can trust right now.

So, I went green-friendly with an all-natural dietary supplement called Very Green.

I learned many types of health benefits (better digestion and vitamins galore) from taking the green powder full of barley, wheat grass, spinach, spirulina and more, but the energy boost I get from the stuff is enough reasoning. My runs have been easier and longer, my moods have been better and more focused, and the fiber in this beast has made digesting a breeze (no need for details there) and less hungry.

It’s so simple, too: I add a scoop of the plant-food-smelling substance to my morning homemade smoothies OR, when I’m feeling extremely brave, I spoon it in to a glass of water (as pictured) and chug it fast as I can. I’m not going to lie: The stuff tastes awful when solo. I really do suggest spooning it in to a smoothie, just trust me! Aside from adding the green supplement in to my ritual, I’ve been making more spinach-based smoothies. If you add a bunch of strawberries and bananas to the mix, you can barely taste the tart leafy vegetable.

While over-the-counter supplements may work better and faster, I feel like the nutrition I’m gaining for taking this natural supplement is better for me in the long haul. It’s something I can add to my diet for the rest of my life (while many drugs suggest stopping after short periods of time.) Plus, I have to repeat, the energy you get from this green little beast is magical! I’m a big coffee drinker, and this stuff is way better when it comes to giving an afternoon kick. Mostly, the energy I have for my runs has been magical since ingesting this.

I may be still struggling with the weight drop, but I knew that this would be a process and I’m starting to see results with this new supplement. Like I said in the beginning of this project, I wanted to attack weigh loss in a lifestyle that will be possible to maintain for the long haul. I don’t want a fad work out regimen or diet that will get boring and unmanageable over time. Slowly, but surely I’ll get there. It doesn’t pay to get green in envy over other people’s weight loss successes. (Hey, puns are the best medicine for any dieter.)

I'm a freelance writer/teacher/travel guru living in Los Angeles (AKA "the land of the flawlessly fit") with one MAJOR weight-loss goal: Look incredible for my upcoming commitment ceremony by getting in shape the right way -- eating right, real exercise and not pretending I don't know what a calorie is. Fun fact: I'm originally from the Midwest, so you can only imagine my weakness for a good beer. That's one carb I won't be giving up -- PROMISE.
